It’s a novel that deftly suggests that the interests of the workers and their bosses are incompatible, and that workers collude in their own oppression.

Tressell’s novel – often called “the worker’s bible” and published four years after his death and burial in a pauper’s grave in Liverpool in 1911 – provided inspiration for the growing Labour movement and the establishment of the welfare state.
