The Blue Caftan (12A)
Screened in conjunction with the League of Artisans, with support from Outside, as part of Leek’s Textile Week, the eponymous blue caftan is a thing of beauty, meticulously stitched and embroidered by Halim, a maalem (master tailor) in one of Morocco’s oldest medinas. Demanding customers and his wife’s failing health cause them to hire Youssef, a talented apprentice. His presence challenges the work and home life of Halim and Mina. This entrancing drama captures Halim’s internal struggle between tradition and the man he wants to be. “Working with an intricacy that rivals that of the craftsman at the center of her film, the auteur crafts a surprisingly warm story that subverts expectations at almost every turn.” Indiewire
