Mapantsula (15)
A true classic of guerrilla filmmaking, Mapantsula is now restored to watch in stunning 4K, marking the 30th anniversary of South African Freedom Day in April 2024. Working under extreme censorship, director Oliver Schmitz created a radical and rare anti-apartheid feature film. It tells the story of Panic, a petty gangster, caught up in the web of the authorities, pushed to betray those fighting for change. Mapantsula provides a miraculous opportunity to understand South Africa from within during its struggle for freedom, “South Africa from a black perspective … it’s about time” Spike Lee.
