Ladybird (15)
A few might remember we screened this gem back in 2018, but we thought Greta Gerwig’s (Barbie, 20th Century Women) directorial debut deserved another screening. Set in Sacramento in 2002, it stars Saoirse Ronan as confused, precocious teenager ‘Ladybird’. Drifting through her final year at a strict Catholic school, she is full of daydreams and lofty aspirations, prompting clashes with her mother (Laurie Metcalf), who is preoccupied with money and more practical concerns. Ronan and Metcalf’s sensational performances and Gerwig’s sophisticated writing make it an incredibly personal, authentic and involving coming-of-age story beautifully and sensitively realised, earning it 5 Academy Award nominations.
