Hidden Away: The Unseen Paintings of Derek Higginson – Preview
You are cordially invited to our exhibition preview “Hidden Away”:
DEREK JAMES HIGGINSON 1930-2020 North Staffordshire Artist
Derek Higginson was born in the city of Stoke-on-Trent in 1930. He passed away in 2020 after living for the previous 50 years in the Staffordshire Moorlands with his wife June.
Derek gained his National Diploma in Lithography and Design at the Burslem School of Art. After completing National Service in the Royal Air Force he went on to work in the pottery industry and then as a teacher in local schools and in the prison service.
Derek was proud to be a founder member of both the Unit Ten Art Society and of the Staffordshire Art Club as well as being an elect member of the Staffordshire Society of Artists.
His work is highly-distinctive – drawing on the inspiration of growing-up in the Potteries community or of his extensive travels in Europe or of the sacrifice of family and citizens in the wars of the twentieth century.
Collectors of his work can be found across Europe and the United States of America and we hope to build on that knowledge and appreciation of Derek in this previously unseen collection, here in Leek, in the Staffordshire Moorlands that meant so much to Derek.
This exhibition has been supported by the Burslem Community Development Trust.
Exhibition Sat 1st July to Sat 5th August
The Gallery will be open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm each week, and the first Sunday in each month, 11am to 4pm.
