Blue Jean (15) – Cancelled

We apologise for having to cancel this film, due to the non-delivery of the disc, which appears to be lost in the post. Unfortunately, under the terms of the screening licence, we have to cancel 48 hours in advance of the screening, to give sufficient notice to our audience. If there is sufficient interest, we may be able to screen the film in the future.

A terrific portrayal of Jean, in the first flush of a lesbian romance, caught in an uncomfortable limbo between two worlds. It is England 1988; Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government is about to pass Section 28, a law stigmatising homosexuality in education and forcing Jean, a PE teacher at a secondary school in the northeast, to live a precarious double life. It’s crucial Jean’s employers don’t find out she is gay, but at the same time the secrecy is alienating her from her own life.  Oakley’s frank, searing and accomplished feature debut is brilliantly acted against a well-chosen soundtrack of punchy 1980s pop anthems, a pleasing ode to queer resilience at a pivotal point in British history. “Surely a slam-dunk masterpiece.” The Independent
