Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha returns with this exuberant and charming comedy. It’s the austere days of 1987 Luton and teenager Javed wants nothing more than to escape the dreary town and its lack of opportunity. Amidst the racial and economic turmoil of the times, Javed is drawn to music and poetry, finding parallels and a cathartic outlet for his pent-up dreams in Bruce Springsteen’s lyrics.
