Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel spar in Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh’s incisive comedy of art and avarice. Lori (Coel) divides her time between freelance art restoration and work in a food truck. Her fortunes change when she’s approached by the estranged heirs of brilliant painter Julian Sklar (McKellen) with an exciting plan for Lori to finish nine uncompleted, abandoned paintings (‘The Christophers’) from Sklar’s London home, thereby reaping a third of the profits after Sklar’s imminent death. What could possibly go wrong? Brilliantly scripted by Ed Solomon, blisteringly performed by an acerbic McKellen and a cagey Coel, The Christophers is a witty, exhilarating and complex new offering from Soderbergh.
