Exhibition Preview – Abstract 3

You are cordially invited to the preview of The Foxlowe Main Gallery’s new exhibition, which shows the work of three Royal Birmingham Society Artists – Steve Evans, Mike Sadler and David Walton.  Their work is both colourful and engaging and a result of serious and inspired investigations into their chosen areas of study.  The artists are also available to discuss their work on January 18th February 1st and February 29th between 1pm and 3pm.  The exhibition runs between Saturday 11th January until Saturday 6th March.

Steve Evans’ three dimensional work is informed by his background in structural engineering. It incorporates a variety of materials. Some works utilise Perspex and nylon line or incorporate the drawing techniques which are closely related to his wall mounted work.  Others are constructions, made with soldered copper tubes and wire. These are then spray painted. All have a very strong linear element.

His work has been shown around the East and West Midlands, Merseyside and South Yorkshire including numerous solo exhibitions.

He was Artist in Residence at the New Art Gallery Walsall between January and March 2017.

His work is held in the RBSA archive and in private collections in the UK, the Netherlands, France and New Zealand.

Mike Sadler works in series, usually developing a body of work by focusing on a single word or short phrase.

All work produced in the last few years has been based on his layman’s interest in astronomical phenomena and space exploration including the ‘Transit’, “Early One Morning’ and ‘Binary’ paintings. His latest series is entitled ‘Satellites’.

He has become increasingly focused on using fewer formal and compositional elements in order to produce groups of closely related images which hopefully convey the sense of credible abstract worlds.

Mike’s work has been highly commended at the Shire Hall Open, The Three Counties Open, The Potteries Museum and Art gallery Open and at the RBSA. His work is held in a number of public and private collections.

David Walton

Over the last year, David Walton has developed an interest in shaped panels and is influenced by the constructions of artists like Frank Stella.  David has explored the geometry of tessellating shapes in a variety of colourful nets. The paintings in oils on plywood are cut out with a jigsaw.

David would be described as a hard edged painter.
