Empire of Light (15)

From Academy Award-winning director and writer Sam Mendes, Empire of Light is a moving story about the power of human connection during turbulent times. Set in and around a faded cinema in an English seaside town in the early 1980s, it follows Hilary (Olivia Colman) a duty manager at The Empire, struggling with her mental health, and Stephen (Micheal Ward), a new employee who longs to escape the provincial town where he faces daily adversity. Finding a sense of belonging through their unlikely and tender relationship, Hilary and Stephen discover the healing power of music, cinema, and community. Featuring Toby Jones and Colin Firth in supporting roles, the subtle but perfectly judged cinematography of Roger Deakins manages to beautifully construct each frame illuminating this intimate story.
